The War of the American Revolution, fought between Great Britain and thirteen British colonies in North America, lasted from 1775 to 1783. For the first three years of the war, the British had successes that persuaded many Loyalists that victory was attainable. The turning point came in autumn 1777 with losses in New York City and Princeton. General Burgoyne's complicated strategy for the 1777 campaign (which historians mark as one of two major flaws with his plan) involved connecting forces in Quebec to ones in New York City; they were cut off from each other by Continental Army forces. Furthermore, General Howe's Hessian mercenaries were defeated by American General George Washington at Trenton and then again at Princeton. This war was the first in which the fledgling United States gained foreign allies, namely France and Spain. The war was also financially costly for both sides; the British spent over £80 million and ended with a national debt of £250 million (about $400 million) whereas the Americans spent about $37 million (including $12 million to France for military supplies). The American Revolution was successful in achieving independence from Great Britain. However, internal strife within the United States over issues such as states' rights and the national currency left an enduring legacy; it also weakened the new nation's government at a crucial time, during its participation in World War I.(1790) ""The Constitution of United States of America"". It replaced the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, which had been in place since 1781.
